Torrents load right in the browser and can be downloaded without the need for a torrent client. Magnet links are natively supported and media associated with magnet links can be streamed and played within the browser. Websites don’t require servers to deliver content to visitors because they are powered by distributed technology and not a central server.

These are the features that make BitTorrent’s Project Maelstrom stand out. It helps regular users surf the web, easily download torrents, and conveniently stream media. And it helps developers share content, games, videos, and apps as distributed files. They don’t need a central server to host the content they want to share with the public.

To put it as simple as possible, Project Maelstrom blends together the functionality you would expect to get from a torrent client with the functionality you would expect to get from a browser. Not any browser mind you, Google’s Chromium web browser. You see, BitTorrent used Chromium as the basis for its Maelstrom browser. And that is a good.

It means that Maelstrom is just as fast as Google’s web browser. It means that Maelstrom covers all the features and functions that Google’s web browser has to offer, like incognito browsing, the option to add extensions, and the option to sign into an account and sync your bookmarks, history, and settings with all your devices.

At the time of writing this, Maelstrom is still at an early development stage. A Beta version is available for Windows while a Beta version for Mac is “coming soon.” Project Maelstrom launched as an invite-only Alpha in December 2014, moved on to a public Beta in April 2015, and will be ready a stable, final version, sometime in the future. I don’t know precisely when. If I did, I would tell you.

BitTorrent fans are sure to like Maelstrom. It is a Chromium-based browser that supports torrents and magnet links. It’s like melding together a browser and a torrent client.

Pros

Maelstrom has the same minimalist interface as Google Chrome. Furthermore, Maelstrom provides access to the same settings, features and functions as Google Chrome. Maelstrom can download torrents. Maelstrom natively supports magnet links and can stream media associated with magnet links. Maelstrom gives developers a means of sharing content that is not based on a central server. Maelstrom is free softare.

Cons

Maelstrom is still in its early development stages. The installer doesn’t ask you to choose where Maelstrom will be installed and doesn’t ask if it can import your browsing history from other browsers; it only asks you to set Maelstrom as the default browser.
